Hyperemesis Gravidarum (Severe Morning Sickness)

Morning sickness, which includes nausea and vomiting, is a frequent occurrence throughout pregnancy. Despite the name, it can happen at any time of day or night. Morning sickness is most common during the first trimester, but it can last throughout pregnancy. Simple solutions such as eating small snacks, drinking ginger ale, and taking medications can help relieve symptoms. However, in severe situations, it might progress to hyperemesis gravidarum, which necessitates medical intervention.

Symptoms of Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is typically characterized by nausea, with or without vomiting. Certain smells and meals frequently trigger symptoms.

  • Time: Morning sickness typically begins before week nine and ends in the middle or end of the second trimester.
  • Triggers: Some foods, smells, and even the sight of certain meals are common triggers.

Causes of Morning Sickness

The exact cause of morning sickness is unclear. However, hormone changes during pregnancy are likely to have a significant impact on it. In rare circumstances, severe nausea and vomiting may be caused by underlying medical conditions such as thyroid or gallbladder disease.

Diagnosis of Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is diagnosed based on its symptoms. In extreme circumstances, such as suspected hyperemesis gravidarum, healthcare providers may perform:

  • Physical examinations: To determine dehydration or weight loss.
  • Urine and blood tests: To determine electrolyte levels and kidney function.

Prevention of Morning Sickness

Although there is no surefire strategy to avoid morning sickness, the following measures may minimize the likelihood or severity:

  • Prenatal Vitamins: Taking a daily vitamin supplement before and during pregnancy can be beneficial.
  • Dietary Changes: Eat smaller, more frequent meals and avoid triggers such as strong odors or spicy foods.
