Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It alters the body’s mechanism to process sugar, i.e., glucose. This condition leads to an increase in blood sugar levels. Gestational diabetes can have a detrimental impact on mothers and their neonatal health. However, it is usually treatable with lifestyle changes and medical procedures, ensuring a successful pregnancy and delivery.

Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes

Most women with gestational diabetes have no visible signs, making periodic prenatal tests critical. Symptoms may include the following:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination

Causes of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is caused by hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. The placenta generates hormones that reduce insulin sensitivity, leading to rising blood sugar levels. Prenatal weight and genetic susceptibility can also play a role.

Diagnosis

Gestational diabetes is usually diagnosed between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy using the following tests:

  • Glucose Challenge Test (GCT): A screening test that includes a glucose drink followed by a blood sugar check one hour later.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): If the GCT findings are abnormally high, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is given. This involves fasting overnight, drinking a sweet solution, and checking blood sugar levels at regular intervals.

Prevention

Although gestational diabetes cannot be completely avoided, following healthy habits before and during pregnancy can help to reduce the risk.

  • Maintain a healthy weight: Having a healthy pre-pregnancy weight reduces risk.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Emphasize whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
  • Stay active: Take part in regular physical activity, such as brisk walking or swimming.
  • Monitor weight gain: During pregnancy, maintain weight gain within the recommended limits advised by your healthcare provider.
