Overview
A ventral hernia is a protrusion of abdominal contents through a weakness or defect in the anterior abdominal wall. Ventral hernias encompass several subtypes including incisional, umbilical, epigastric, and Spigelian hernias. They typically present as a visible or palpable lump in the abdomen that may increase in size on straining or standing. Symptoms range from mild discomfort and cosmetic concern to severe pain in cases of incarceration or strangulation, where the herniated contents become trapped and their blood supply is compromised. All symptomatic hernias and those at risk of complications require surgical repair to prevent potentially life-threatening strangulation.
The Procedure

Mesh repair has significantly reduced hernia recurrence rates and is the standard of care for most ventral hernias. The laparoscopic approach offers smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, and faster recovery.
Recovery
Recovery following ventral hernia repair depends on the size of the hernia and the surgical approach. Open repairs typically require 4 to 6 weeks for full recovery, while laparoscopic repairs offer faster return to activity within 1 to 2 weeks. Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity during the recovery period. A supportive abdominal binder may be recommended.
