Overview
Laparoscopic hernia surgery represents the gold standard minimally invasive approach for the repair of inguinal, umbilical, ventral, and incisional hernias. Using a small camera and slender surgical instruments introduced through 2 to 3 tiny incisions, the surgeon is able to visualise the hernia defect, reduce the herniated contents, and place a mesh patch to reinforce the abdominal wall — all without the need for a large open incision. Laparoscopic repair offers significant advantages over traditional open surgery, including substantially reduced post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, faster return to work and daily activities, superior cosmetic results, and lower rates of wound infection.
The Procedure
At ILS Hospitals, laparoscopic hernia surgery is performed under general anaesthesia by our highly trained minimally invasive surgical team. For inguinal hernias, both TAPP (transabdominal preperitoneal) and TEP (totally extraperitoneal) techniques are offered. For ventral and incisional hernias, laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM) repair is the preferred technique. Three small incisions of 5 to 12 mm are made, and carbon dioxide gas is insufflated to create a working space within the abdominal cavity. The hernia contents are reduced, the defect is identified, and a mesh of appropriate size is placed and fixed securely to cover the defect with adequate overlap on all sides. The procedure typically takes 45 to 90 minutes.
Recovery
The advantages of laparoscopic hernia repair are most evident in the recovery period. Patients experience significantly less post-operative pain compared to open surgery and are typically discharged within 24 hours. Most patients return to light activity within 3 to 5 days and full activity within 1 to 2 weeks. Bilateral inguinal hernias can be repaired simultaneously through the same three small incisions — a major advantage over open surgery.
