Breast abscess drainage

Breast abscess drainage is a procedure performed to remove pus from the breast and relieve pressure, swelling, or pain caused by the infection. The procedure helps prevent the infection and supports the healing of the affected breast tissue.

Before the procedure, the surgeon evaluates the breast through a physical examination and imaging tests such as an ultrasound to identify the size and location of the abscess and assess the extent of the surrounding infection. This evaluation enables the surgeons to plan the most appropriate treatment approach for optimal recovery.

Depending on the abscess size and characteristics, drainage may be performed using a needle through a surgical incision. To ensure the patient’s comfort, the procedure is carried out under anaesthesia. The area is properly cleaned once the pus is drained, and a dressing is applied. In cases, to prevent re-accumulation of the infection, a small drain is temporarily placed to allow uninterrupted drainage.

Post-procedure, patients may experience mild discomfort, tenderness, or drainage from the treated area during the initial healing period. The healthcare professionals ensure that the patient undergoes regular dressing changes, adheres to the prescribed medications, and attends follow-up visits to ensure the infection resolves and healing occurs. They are also advised to seek medical attention if there is increasing redness, swelling, fever, or persistent discharge from the affected breast.

Breast abscess drainage is an effective procedure for managing breast infections and preventing further spread. Timely treatment, appropriate wound care, and close follow-up support healing and recovery while helping restore breast health.
