Foreign Body Removal

Foreign body removal is a surgical procedure performed to remove objects such as metal fragments, wood splinters, glass fragments, or other materials that become lodged in the body and cannot be safely removed by non-surgical methods. The procedure is often recommended when the foreign body causes persistent inflammation, pain, infection, or creates a risk of injury to surrounding tissues.

Before the procedure, the healthcare specialists thoroughly examine the depth, location, and nature of the foreign body. To determine the safest method of removal, imaging investigations such as X-rays, ultrasound, or CT imaging are suggested. This process further helps minimize the risk of damage to nearby blood vessels, tendons, nerves, or other vital structures throughout surgery.

Depending on the complexity of the case, the procedure may be performed under local, regional, or general anaesthesia. To access the foreign body, the surgeon makes an incision over or near it while protecting the nearby healthy tissues. Once the object is removed, the affected area is carefully examined to ensure there are no remaining fragments, specifically in cases involving glass, metal, or organic materials, and the wound is cleaned properly.

Recovery relies on the location of the foreign body and the extent of the procedure required to remove it. Patients may experience temporary soreness or swelling around the treated area. If the procedure involves treating the muscles, tendons, or joints, the healthcare professional will suggest restricting movement of the affected area for a short period. Wound care restrictions are also provided to reduce the risk of infection and promote recovery.

Foreign body removal is an effective procedure for removing foreign bodies and repairing tissue damage. Early surgical intervention and appropriate post-surgery care result in faster healing.
