PICC line support

PICC line support is a process in which a thin tube is placed in a vein to provide sustained access for medications, nutritional support, treatments, and blood tests. The procedure supports

long-term treatment, thereby reducing the need for repeated needle insertions, and is recommended for patients who require frequent intravenous treatments for a longer duration.

Before the procedure, healthcare professionals analyze the patient’s medical condition, the suitability of the vein, and treatment requirements. To identify an appropriate vein and ascertain accurate catheter placement, the team suggests imaging guidance such as ultrasound. Detailed evaluations ensure safe insertion and proper use of the PICC line throughout the treatment period.

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia. A suitable vein, specifically in the upper arm, is identified, and the catheter is carefully inserted and advanced to a larger vein near the heart. Once the PICC line position is correctly confirmed, the insertion site is closed with a dressing, which further helps secure the catheter and maintain its stability.

Post-procedure, regular monitoring and maintenance play an important role in ensuring the PICC line functions efficiently. Patients and caregivers are given guidance on catheter care and dressing changes, and are educated about precautions to limit the risk of accidental displacement and infection. Timely assessment of the PICC line helps identify early concerns and ensure continued safe use throughout treatment. Any signs of redness, leakage, pain, or difficulty using the line should be reported to healthcare professionals for further evaluation.

PICC line support enables patients to continue their prescribed treatment without frequent needle insertions. Regular care of the PICC line and adherence to follow-up instructions help maintain the device and support its use throughout the treatment period.
