Orchiectomy (Non-Urology)

Orchiectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove one or both testicles after they have been critically damaged due to infection, trauma, compromised blood supply, or conditions in which preserving the affected tissue is no longer feasible. The procedure aims to reduce future complications while protecting the surrounding tissues and the patient’s health.

Before surgery, the healthcare specialists carefully evaluate the affected testicle to identify the extent of damage and assess whether surgical removal is required. Imaging studies such as ultrasound, clinical examination, and other important investigations enable an insight into tissue viability, blood flow, and the involvement of nearby structures. The observations and analysis allow the surgical team to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

The procedure is performed under general or regional anaesthesia. During surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the groin or scrotal region, as per the planned surgical approach and the condition. The affected testicle is then separated from surrounding tissues before removal. The blood vessels and spermatic cord are safely managed to minimize bleeding, after which the incision is closed using sutures to support healing.

Recovery relies on the severity of the surgery and the patient’s health condition. Patients may undergo minimal swelling and tenderness in the groin or scrotal region, which often diminishes within a few days. Patients are advised to avoid activities that strain the groin, including heavy lifting and vigorous exercise, until the surgical area is healed. Wearing a scrotal support garment, if recommended, can help reduce discomfort.

Orchiectomy is a well-established surgical procedure that provides effective treatment when the affected testicle cannot be preserved. Appropriate post-operative care and timely follow-up support healing and help patients gradually return to their routine activities.
