Overview
A sebaceous cyst is a benign, closed sac that forms beneath the skin, typically arising from blocked sebaceous glands or hair follicles. These cysts are filled with sebum, a waxy, cheese-like material produced by the oil glands of the skin. They most commonly occur on the scalp, face, neck, back, and groin. While sebaceous cysts are non-cancerous, they can become enlarged, painful, and prone to infection. An infected cyst may rupture, causing significant discomfort and local skin inflammation. Surgical removal is the only definitive treatment that prevents recurrence.
The Procedure

The surgeon makes a careful incision over the cyst, ensuring that the entire cyst wall and its contents are removed intact. Complete removal of the cyst capsule is essential, if any part of the cyst wall is left behind, the cyst will recur. In cases of infected or ruptured cysts, the procedure may be staged, first treating the infection, then excising the residual cyst capsule once the inflammation has resolved. The wound is closed with absorbable or non-absorbable sutures based on the site of excision.
Recovery
Most patients recover quickly from sebaceous cyst removal. The area may remain tender and slightly swollen for a few days following the procedure. Sutures are removed within 7 to 14 days, depending on the location. Patients are advised to keep the wound clean, avoid squeezing or pressing the area, and follow dressing change instructions diligently. The excised tissue is routinely sent for histopathological analysis.
