Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is an advanced branch of cardiology that deals with non-invasive techniques to evaluate the functions of the heart and detect abnormalities. It also uses various other procedures offering treatment for defects and abnormalities.

When the term non-invasive is used, it implies that the incisions are not made near/on the heart. Instead, minute incisions are made on wrists and legs to insert diagnostic probes through the blood vessels, thereby justifying the specialty ‘interventional’ cardiology. It uses a catheter (a small, tube-like structure) to carry out most of the procedures, that rectifies the blocked, damaged or narrowed blood vessels.
