Parkinsons Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which a section of your brain deteriorates, resulting in increasingly severe symptoms over time. While this disorder is most known for affecting muscle control, balance, and mobility, it can also have a variety of additional consequences on your senses, thinking capacity, mental health, and so on. Parkinson’s disease normally grows with age, with an average onset age of 60 years. It is significantly more common in men. While Parkinson’s disease is typically associated with old age, it can affect adults as young as 20 (though this is highly rare, and many people have a parent, full sibling, or child with the same condition). Parkinson’s disease damages a specific area of the brain known as the basal ganglia. As this area deteriorates, you lose previously controlled skills. Researchers discovered that Parkinson’s disease alters brain chemistry significantly.

Symptoms

The most well-known symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include loss of muscular control. However, researchers now recognize that motor control impairments are not the only symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Motor-related Symptoms

Parkinson’s disease has the following motor symptoms, or movement-related symptoms:

  • Slowed movements (bradykinesia).
  • Tremor while muscles are at rest.
  • Rigidity or stiffness.
  • Unstable posture or walking gait.

Non-motor Symptoms

Non-motor symptoms (with possible early warning signs highlighted in bold) include:

  • Autonomic nervous system symptoms.
  • Depression.
  • Loss of sense of smell (anosmia).
  • Sleep problems
  • Trouble thinking and focusing

Causes

Several factors can raise the risk:

  • Genetic factors
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Environmental factors

Diagnosis

Parkinson’s disease diagnosis is mostly a clinical process, which requires a healthcare expert to examine your symptoms, ask questions, and evaluate your medical history. Some diagnostic and laboratory tests are available; however, they are typically used to rule out other illnesses or causes. When
healthcare providers suspect Parkinson’s disease or need to rule out other illnesses, they might use several imaging and diagnostic procedures. This includes:

  • Blood tests.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan.
  • Genetic testing.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan.

Parkinson’s Disease Treatment at ILS Hospital

At ILS Hospital, we provide comprehensive care for Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. Our multidisciplinary team of neurologists, physiotherapists, and support staff offers personalized treatment plans to manage symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life.

  • Diagnosis: Our expert neurologists use advanced diagnostic tools, including MRI, CT scans, and clinical assessments, to accurately diagnose Parkinson’s disease and rule out other conditions
    with similar symptoms.
  • Medication: The primary treatment for Parkinson’s disease involves medications that help control symptoms. Levodopa, dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors, and other medications are tailored to
each patient’s needs to improve motor function and manage tremors, stiffness, and slowness of
    movement.
  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS): For patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease who do not respond well to medications, we offer Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). This surgical procedure involves
implanting a device that sends electrical impulses to specific brain areas to help control motor
    symptoms.
  • Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation: Physical therapy is crucial in improving mobility, balance, and strength. Our experienced physiotherapists design customized exercise programs to help patients maintain independence and prevent falls.
  • Speech and Occupational Therapy: Speech therapy helps with voice and swallowing issues, while occupational therapy focuses on improving daily living skills, enhancing the patient’s ability to carry out everyday tasks.
  • Lifestyle Modifications & Support: We provide nutritional counseling, emotional support, and lifestyle adjustments to enhance overall well-being and manage symptoms more effectively.

At ILS Hospital, our holistic approach ensures patients with Parkinson’s disease receive the best care, combining advanced medical treatments with rehabilitation and support to improve their quality of life.
