Overview
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure used to treat small to medium varicose veins and spider veins. It involves the injection of a chemical sclerosant solution directly into the affected vein, causing the vein wall to become irritated, swell, and eventually collapse. Over time, the body reabsorbs the treated vein, and blood flow is naturally redirected through healthier, deeper vessels. Sclerotherapy is particularly effective for thread veins, reticular veins, and smaller varicosities that are not suitable for surgical stripping. It offers excellent cosmetic results with minimal downtime and is considered the gold standard treatment for superficial venous disease.
The Procedure
At ILS Hospitals, sclerotherapy is performed in an outpatient setting without the need for anaesthesia. Using a fine needle, the sclerosant solution, typically sodium tetradecyl sulphate or polidocanol is injected precisely into the target vein under direct vision or ultrasound guidance (foam sclerotherapy). The number of injections required depends on the extent and distribution of the veins being treated. Each session takes 20 to 40 minutes. Compression bandaging or compression stockings are applied immediately after the procedure to maximise the effectiveness of the treatment. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve optimal results, particularly for extensive venous disease.
Recovery
Sclerotherapy requires no hospitalisation and patients can walk and resume most activities immediately. Some mild bruising, redness, or itching at the injection sites is normal and resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. Compression stockings should be worn for 2 to 4 weeks post-procedure. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure on the treated areas and strenuous exercise for 1 to 2 weeks. Final results become apparent over 4 to 8 weeks as the treated veins are fully absorbed.
