Overview
A breast lump can arise from a variety of causes, ranging from benign conditions such as fibroadenoma, fibrocystic disease, and breast abscess to early-stage malignancies that require prompt attention. While imaging investigations such as ultrasound and mammography, combined with fine needle aspiration or core biopsy, provide important diagnostic information, surgical excision is recommended in cases where the lump is growing, symptomatic, or where histological analysis requires a larger tissue sample. Breast lump excision, also known as lumpectomy or wide local excision, is a safe, effective procedure performed under general or local anaesthesia.
The Procedure
At ILS Hospitals, breast lump excision is performed by our experienced surgical oncology team. The procedure is carefully planned using pre-operative imaging to precisely locate the lump and determine the appropriate surgical margin. An incision is made in a cosmetically optimal position, often along the natural skin lines of the breast, and the lump is excised along with a margin of surrounding normal tissue. The excised specimen is sent for intraoperative frozen section analysis or routine histopathology to confirm the diagnosis. The wound is closed in layers using absorbable sutures, and the cosmetic outcome of the breast is carefully considered throughout the procedure.
Recovery
Most patients are discharged the same day or within 24 hours of surgery. Mild pain and swelling in the breast are expected and are managed with oral analgesics. Patients are advised to wear a supportive bra for comfort, avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks, and keep the wound clean and dry. Histopathology results guide subsequent management, including whether further surgery, radiation, or systemic therapy is required.
