Overview
Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures distributed throughout the body as part of the lymphatic system. They play a crucial role in immune function, filtering lymph fluid and trapping bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells. Enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes may indicate a range of conditions including infection, inflammatory disease, or malignancy such as lymphoma or metastatic cancer. When imaging and clinical examination cannot determine the cause of lymph node enlargement, a biopsy is essential to obtain tissue for definitive histopathological analysis. A lymph node biopsy is therefore a critical diagnostic procedure that directly guides subsequent treatment decisions.
The Procedure
At ILS Hospitals, lymph node biopsy may be performed as either a fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), core needle biopsy, or excisional biopsy depending on the clinical indication and the location of the lymph node. Excisional biopsy, in which the entire lymph node is surgically removed, provides the most comprehensive tissue sample and is the preferred approach when lymphoma or other haematological malignancies are suspected. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia and takes 20 to 30 minutes. The excised node is sent to the pathology laboratory for detailed microscopic examination, immunohistochemistry, and additional molecular studies as required.
Recovery
Recovery following lymph node biopsy is generally uncomplicated. Patients may experience mild pain, swelling, or bruising at the biopsy site, which resolves within a few days. Sutures are removed at 7 to 10 days post-procedure. Pathology results are typically available within 5 to 7 working days.
