Overview
An abscess is a painful collection of pus that forms beneath the skin or within body tissues as a result of a bacterial infection. The body’s immune response triggers localised inflammation, causing tissue to break down and form a cavity filled with pus, dead cells, and bacteria. While minor abscesses may respond to antibiotics and warm compresses, most require a clinical procedure to drain the infected material effectively. Abscess incision and drainage is a straightforward, highly effective minor surgical procedure performed to relieve pain, eliminate infection, and promote healing.
The Procedure
At ILS Hospitals, the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia to ensure complete patient comfort. The surgeon makes a small incision directly over the abscess, allowing the pus to drain completely. The cavity is then thoroughly irrigated and cleaned to remove all infected material and reduce the risk of recurrence. In some cases, a sterile gauze wick or drain may be placed within the cavity to keep it open and facilitate ongoing drainage. The wound is then dressed appropriately and monitored for healing. The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis.
Recovery
Most patients experience immediate relief from pain and pressure following the procedure. The wound is reviewed after 24 to 48 hours, and the wick or drain is progressively removed as the cavity heals from within. Patients are advised on wound care, hygiene, and dressing changes. Antibiotics may be prescribed if there is surrounding soft tissue infection or in patients with compromised immunity. Healing is generally complete within one to two weeks.
