Laparotomy (Emergency)

Laparotomy is a surgical procedure that helps the surgeons identify and treat life-threatening conditions surrounding the abdomen, such as severe infection, internal bleeding, burst intestine, or injuries around the abdominal organs. The surgery helps the surgeons to access the abdominal cavity, identify the cause of the concern, and ensure necessary treatment during the same operation.

Before the treatment, healthcare professionals conduct a rapid assessment using blood tests, imaging scans, or physical examinations to understand the patient’s condition and prepare for surgery. However, in emergency situations, surgery is recommended without delay to avoid additional complications.

Emergency laparotomy is performed under general anaesthesia. To access the affected area, they make an incision in the abdomen and identify the actual concern. Depending on the findings, the procedure may involve removing infected tissue, repairing a perforation, controlling internal bleeding, or treating injuries in the abdominal organs. Once the required treatment is complete, the incision is precisely closed.

Recovery depends on the condition treated during surgery and the extent of the procedure. Patients are closely observed after the operation, particularly for signs of infection, bleeding, and the return of normal bowel function. After an emergency laparotomy, maintaining good nutrition supports better healing, and gradual movement can reduce the risk of subsequent complications. The healthcare team provides guidance on diet, activity levels, wound care, and other aspects of recovery based on the treatment performed during surgery.

Laparotomy addresses abdominal emergencies; hence, post-operative care remains an important part of treatment. Ongoing medical supervision, appropriate nutrition, and adherence to recovery instructions support healing and overall recovery.
