Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a type of tumour that grows in the tissues and forms a protective covering around the specific organs. This tissue forms:

  • The pleura that surrounds the lungs
  • The peritoneum surrounds the organs of the abdomen and pelvis
  • The pericardium that surrounds the heart
  • The tunica vaginalis that surrounds the testicles

When most people hear the word mesothelioma, they associate it with pleural cancer. This type of mesothelioma is typically cancerous and is caused by asbestos exposure.

At ILS Hospitals, treatment for mesothelioma is comprehensive, offering a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. Our expert oncologists use advanced diagnostic tools such as biopsy, CT scans, and MRI to accurately diagnose and stage mesothelioma, a rare cancer primarily caused by asbestos exposure. Based on the type, stage, and location of the cancer, we develop tailored treatment plans that focus on improving survival rates, alleviating symptoms, and enhancing quality of life. We ensure comprehensive, compassionate care throughout the mesothelioma treatment journey.

Types of Mesothelioma

There are several ways to refer to mesothelioma. One method is to assess whether the tumor is cancerous (malignant mesothelioma) or benign. Other forms refer back to the cavities generated by mesothelial tissue and are named:

  • Pleural mesothelioma
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma is sometimes referred to as abdominal mesothelioma
  • Pericardial mesothelioma
  • Tunica vaginalis testicular mesothelioma, sometimes referred to as testicular mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can also be classified based on the type of cell that forms the tumor. The three types are epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and biphasic.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma can occur without symptoms, which vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Here are some signs you must look out for:

  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Malaise is a general feeling of being unwell
  • Weakness
  • Unintended weight loss

Causes

The primary cause is due to previous exposure to asbestos fibers and dust. Between 70% and 80% of patients with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos, the majority of which was at work.
Symptoms take more than 20 years to appear. People develop mesothelioma after being exposed to similar minerals, such as silica and erionite.

Diagnosis

Our team takes your medical history and conducts a physical assessment. Hearing out your symptoms and listening to your chest will give the first signs. To make a diagnosis, we will prescribe a set of tests, which include :

Blood tests

  • Lung function tests
  • Imaging tests include chest X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, positron emission tomography (PET)
  • scans, and, less commonly, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
  • Biopsy

Prevention

The best way to prevent mesothelioma is to avoid asbestos and other harmful minerals. If you are exposed to asbestos, be sure to follow the guidelines for wearing protective masks and clothing.
