Ophthalmology is the medical domain that treats diseases related to eye and orbit. Apart from providing treatment for eye diseases, an ophthalmologist, the eye specialist, also aids towards vision correction by prescribing glasses, and contact lenses.

Some of the eye disorders that are treated by an ophthalmologist are

  • Refractive error such as miopia, presbiopia, hypermetropia etc.
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataract
  • Dry eyes
  • Macular degeneration
  • Uveitis
  • Strabismus- misalignment of eyes)
  • Proptosis (bulged eyes)
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Excessive tearing (nasolacrimal duct obstruction)
  • Eye tumors

The treatment often includes prescribed eye drops, pills, vision aiding implants and tools. Very often surgery is required to correct it. Some of the common eye procedures performed include-
