Infertility is a condition when a couple either fails to conceive or carry a full term pregnancy without the medical intervention. The cause can be either due to male infertility, female fertility or combined issues of both partners. However, 1-2 out of 10 cases do not even point out an exact cause of the same.

The most common causes of female infertility are related to ovulation and menstrual problems. However, other reasons such as pelvic diseases, tubal blockage, advanced maternal age are also common.

The most common causes of Male infertility are due to the low semen quality. However, other reasons such as endocrine problems, persistent use of drugs, radiation, infection. Testicular malformations, hormone imbalance, or blockage of the man’s duct system can also be the reason for the same.

At ILS Hospitals, the following types of Assisted Reproductive Technology are provided or referred:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)- Sperm sample is inserted directly into the womb during ovulation.
  • Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT)- Sperm sample is inserted directly into the Fallopian tube.
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)- Eggs and sperm are collected and fused together, before placing back in the womb.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)- A single sperm is inserted into a single egg and the embryo is transplanted back into the womb.
  • Donated sperm/eggs/embryo- Samples from an undisclosed donor are used for fertilization. The most suitable technique for couples with a male partner having a low sperm count, and/or female partner having no/inefficient eggs or embryo.
  • Surrogacy- A volunteer healthy woman carries the in-vitro embryos to a full term. Then she transfers the guardianship of the baby to the intended parents.
