What is Painless Delivery?
Most women can testify that childbirth is their most painful life experience in terms of physical pain.
1. Labor pain causes fear & tension in the patient’s mind which causes sympathetic stimulation which may inhibit uterine contraction.
2. Due to fear & pain patient cannot relax her pelvic floor muscles which may delay the decent of the presenting part. So, if the pain during the labor can be relieved, patient’s emotional factor is relieved and there is no effect on the labor contraction. So, the painless labor can be done giving some analgesic or inhalation of nitrous oxide & oxygen of 50-50 through an entonox machine and also the labor analgesia can be done by blocking regional nerves which carry the pain sensation from uterine muscles by giving caudal and epidural anesthesia continuously after onset of true labor pain. In this case the doctors have used caudal and epidural anesthesia throughout the whole process of labor and the patient underwent complete painless delivery.

1. Pain relief. Most of the mothers dread the pains and spend sleepless nights visualizing themselves at that time and even resort to suggestions like opening ones hair to decrease pains and other vague things.
2. No stress or anxiety on the part of the mother
3. As no pain is felt she can concentrate on pushing the baby
4. Allows time for rest, exhaustion does not set in.
5. Good for hypertensive patients as they feel relaxed and thus there is no further increase of blood pressure.
6. Does not prolong labor, in fact labor is hastened in some cases.
7. Post labor recovery is faster; hence she can feed her baby early. Mother? infant bonding comes earlier
8. Can participate in the joyous moment of the new arrival.
9. Psychologically she is in an upbeat mood.

• No increase in the incidence of Caesarian section.
